Laem Pak Bia/Pak Thale
We spent the morning of January 21st near the
town of Pak Thale looking for waders and
other water-loving birds with our guide. Then
we took a boat ride to a sand spit at Laem Pak
Bia in the afternoon to look for some
specialties. Pictured here are a few of the 58
species we logged for the day.

White-throated Kingfisher
This character had us guessing many times when all we saw was a blue
streak. Finally, one held still long enough for a photo.
Black-capped Kingfisher
He is a winter visitor to this part of Thailand.
Common Sandpiper

Spotted Redshank
Redish legs and the redish color of the base of the lower bill are
diagnostic.

Common Snipe
And a Black-winged Stilt reflection.

Little Ringed Plover
Common winter visitor to this area; a resident in parts of
northern Thailand.
Common Tern
This juvenile is a common winter visitor to Thailand, but
could become a resident.
Pond Heron
This could be a Javan or a Chinese Pond Heron. Most folks can't tell the
difference in winter.
Richard's Pipit
It looks like this unlucky soul got tangled in something.
We hope he still has a good life.
Greater Painted-Snipe
This lady hid here all day long.
Brahminy Kite
It hunts a lot like an Osprey, and was fun to watch.
Tip
Wahing clothes the old Thai way after a day
of birding. Not so lucky.
Lucky Birds
A common species found round the world.
Collared Kingfisher
This guy just wouldn't hold still for a good picture.
Red-necked Stint
I struggled with this ID from just the picture. Let me
know if you don't agree.
