Maui, Hawai'i
January and February 2008
We spent four weeks on Maui from late January through most of February. We visited
Hosmer Grove in the Haleakala National Park several times. We also visited Kealia and
Kanaha Ponds a couple of times.

We met professional photographers Jack Jeffrey and Jim Denney on one of our visits to
Hosmer Grove. They were at Hosmer to photograph some of the endemic species we
love so much. The day we met Jim and Jack, we had spent at least four hours looking for
the Maui Alauahio, and Jim suggested that we walk along the road near the parking
area. We are grateful to Jim for his advice because we did find the elusive bird in the
bushes right next to the road.
Here are some of the birds we saw:

Hosmer Grove:
Ring-necked pheasant
Apapane
I'iwi
Hawai'i amakihi
Nene (Hawai'ian goose)
Maui Alauahio

Kealia Pond NWR:
Hawai'ian coot
Nutmeg manikin
Ruddy turnstone
Pacific golden-plover

Kanaha Pond:
Black-necked stilt - Knudseni
Hawai'ian coot
Black-crowned night-heron

Kihei:
Zebra dove
Common Myna
Japanese white-eye
